As of 29 June 2026, Tenancy Services, part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), has updated the way tenancy bonds are managed in New Zealand. Previously, landlords and property managers were often heavily involved in facilitating bond transactions with Tenancy Services. Under the new system, tenants have a much more direct role in managing and approving bond-related changes.
Tenants can now access Bond Hub (https://mybond.tenancy.govt.nz/), Tenancy Services' online portal, to view bond information and respond to bond-related transactions, including bond refunds and changes to tenancy records.
Each tenant is assigned a unique Tenant ID, which is important for accessing Bond Hub. This ID may change when a tenant moves to a new tenancy. Tenants can find their Tenant ID on communications received from Tenancy Services or by contacting Tenancy Services on 0800 836 262.
The primary method of communication from Tenancy Services will be via email, typically from bonds@tenancy.govt.nz. These communications will be sent to the email address provided as part of the tenancy records, so it is important that tenants keep their contact details up to date.
When a bond transaction requires a tenant's response, Tenancy Services will send an email containing a unique code. These codes expire after a set period, and tenants are required to respond within the specified timeframe. The response period may vary depending on the type of bond transaction being processed.
Overall, these changes place greater responsibility and control in the hands of tenants. The new digital process is designed to provide more transparency, faster processing times, and a smoother experience when managing tenancy bonds.
