If your home is going to be vacant for an extended period during winter, we recommend taking the following steps to help protect it from cold weather damage.

1. Keep the power on if you have a gas califont

If your home has a gas califont, ensure the power remains switched on. This will help prevent the califont from freezing during periods of very cold weather.

2. Turn off the water supply

Turn off the water mains at the toby, which is usually located at the front boundary of the property. Once the water supply has been turned off, open your taps by a quarter turn, including the hot water taps, to help prevent pipes from freezing or bursting. You should also switch off the power supply to your hot water cylinder.

3. Reduce moisture inside the home

Before leaving, wipe any moisture from windows and ensure curtains or blinds are not resting against damp glass. Leaving the home as dry as possible will help reduce condensation, potential mould growth, and moisture-related damage, ensuring your home is ready for your return.
